More about my journey

Academic Interests:

While pursuing my MSW, my academic research examined the social injustice of prison rape. I attached a link to my thesis for further exploration, for individuals who would like to learn more about this topic or better understand my values.

The Social Injustice of Prison Rape

During my Doctoral studies, I learned about leadership and creating and applying revolutionary concepts to address intractable social problems. The USC DSW program focuses significantly on creating innovative solutions to address the 12 Grand Challenges of Social Work.

As a requirement of my studies, I chose to focus on the Grand Challenges area, Ensuring Healthy Development for All Youth. I developed SCALE UP, a universal, integrative approach to change the culture of education to prioritize wellness alongside academic knowledge. The SCALE UP program and curriculum aim to:

  • Increase well-being by promoting Self-awareness, Connection, Altruism, Leadership, and Empathy for Unlimited Potential

  • Promote a culture of wellness in school settings

  • Improve the skills and knowledge of youth to empower personal well-being

I apply components from SCALE UP in my therapy work to enhance well-being on an individual basis, as is useful.

If you have an interest in learning more about SCALE UP, please feel free to email me.

My most recent academic pursuit studying Buddhist principles led me to study Engaged Buddhism and stumble across the discipline of Humane Education. As a result of my studies and interest in education, animal welfare, and mental health, I decided to create a Farm Sanctuary. Please visit The Jewel Farm Sanctuary to learn more about this passion project. Here is the link to my thesis The Jewel in the Lotus: Humane Education, Engaged Buddhism, and Farming Compassion.

Professional Interests:

My focus lies in holistic wellness. I believe that good mental health involves balance in each dimension. I am passionate about education, and School Social Work will remain a love of mine. I’m particularly interested in Positive Psychology, Animals, and the power of Animal and Human Connection, and learning more about the role of Mind-Body Practices such as Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT/Tapping), Qigong, Yoga, and Mindfulness, in healing.

Professional Development:

Since returning to MN, I have switched gears, in some regards, from my long-time role in education as a School Social Worker to practicing Psychotherapy in a community mental health center, then joining a group practice before establishing Wellness Within. During this time, I have been reflecting on how I can best bring my passion and gifts to individuals and the community and develop professionally in ways that align with my interests. I continue enjoying my private practice work, while working toward developing The Jewel Farm Sanctuary.
